The views_filterblock module basically moves the horizontal filter from the views page content area into a (vertical) block. I like it -- makes the "exposed filter" in Views 1 / Drupal 5.x much more attractive and easy to fit into the page. What's great is the user gets to make the choice in the block, while the results show up in the main content area (a "page" view). This is exactly what I wanted.
Docs seemed a bit on the skimpy side but there's not a whole lot to figure out. The view has to provide a block, seems obvious but I missed it the first time around. Also, once I activated the filter block the behavior of the original view page changed somewhat.
I also wasn't quite able to get how to keep the fieldset collapsed on initial page load.
But none of these really mattered much -- it seems to work just fine. Hasn't gone into production yet but I've tested it quite a bit and it seems quite stable once it's set up.
