The Update Status module checks with drupal.org once a day to see if there are new officially released versions of Drupal and any modules that you are running. So essential in fact, that it is now included and enabled by default with the core Drupal 6. Very well designed and maintained.
I discover this module too late, before it I have to watch updates manually. It's useful almost as a subscription to the Security announcements by Drupal.org.
It's no wonder this module was moved to core in Drupal 6.x. If you don't have it installed, you'd better fix that now.
I love the way you can ignore certain modules such as -dev versions that change often, yet still see how far behind you're getting. The download links are all handy and the colours make it really easy to find what needs updating.
