The RealName module allows the administrator to choose fields from the user profile that will be used to add a "real name" element (method) to a user object. This module fills an important gap in Drupal functionality - and much more.
Not only can you have seperate login and actual user names. You can even combine several independant fields to one user name and this maintain the flexibility that individual fields offer (e.g. for search functionality).
I just hope this module is gonna make it to v7.
