Module Overview

Drupal.org Excerpt:

To all the local plugin_manager users, I'm sorry for letting it stagnate over the last year: I've been busy trying to finish college while working full time. The good news is that I've finally completed it, meaning more free time! Thanks for the patience that you've shown. Now, I think it's time for... [More...]

Huge Time Saver

This plugin save us so much time. We no longer have to double unzip packages, and then push them to the server.

Plugin Manager with XAMPP localhost on Windows

Plugin Manager - Here's some tips to get it running properly; it's a GREAT module actually once you understand what it's doing.

a) MUST have Filezilla server running to use it...will not work without it

b) plugin manager > settings : stored hostname: 127.0.0.1; ftp path: '/' . The forward slash was what made it work for me. It installs modules to /sites/all/modules

c) PHP must allow_fopen to fetch download....

d) Xampp config: I. turn on filezilla as a service II. I created new user in filezilla server called 'drupaladmin',

III. give this user a PW that is the same as drupal admin's for the sake of ease or write it down,

IV. set filezilla ftp home directory to drupal root folder,

V. Add ALL file and directory permissions to drupaladmin user on home directory in filezilla server.

VI. Go back to plugin manager in Drupal,

VII. select only a FEW modules to add and click Install,

VIII. copy/paste the MD5 hash from the iframes of the module download pages into the boxes below the module, click the button to continue,

IX. Installation method: ftp, hostname: 127.0.0.1 NOT localhost, username: drupaladmin, tick 'save username', password: put in drupaladmins's ftp user password,

X. click install.

XI. Be sure to run '[site_url]/update.php'.

XII. If you get an error where the md5 sum doesn't match and you KNOW it does, something messed up on the download from the drupal site (it relies on the availability of the modules from drupal.org). The way to fix this is to start completely over: go to sites/default/files/plugin_manager_cache and delete the tarball of the offending module. Then re-add it through the plugin manager in drupal.

Overkill

http://drupal.org/node/324253

Just use simple shell script to download and unpack your module. There is one for getting the CVS version so you can mod it and make patches too!..

Great functionality, but a pain to use

Here is a summary of the plus points:

+ You can install both modules and themes
+ You can search the whole drupal.org modules and themes pages by name and categories.
+ You can add all the modules and themes you want to download, install or upgrade to a queue and then start the process and let it run.

Exactly the kind of stuff you need when managing sites, but before you get carried away, consider the following "sand in the gearbox" usability issues:

- You have to manually copy in the MD5 hash key of each module before Plugin will download it for you. While this may be fine for a couple of modules, if you are running many Drupal sites or performing a major upgrade this is the biggest nuisance you can think of. It prevents you from automating or even semi-automating the whole process. So I keep going back to the Unix command line and use drush instead.

- FTP is used to actually download the modules. There is a directory autodetect feature which works in some cases, but not in others. When the autodetect fails, it can sometimes be a real challenge to get this working. Also sending your site password over the Internet via FTP is not particularly safe.

Not ideal for multi-site installations

Seems like an interesting module but does not work very well for multi-site installations since you can't control which folder to add the modules to.

Just what I needed.

Ditto the first review. The only caveat is that if you have php set to safe mode you will not be able to run unless you have Archive Tar. See the issue report here: http://drupal.org/node/311501

I just want to add a thank you as this module is just what I needed to be able to play around with my site while behind a firewall that doesn't allow ftp.

One of the best Modules for Drupal

I tried the module today, installing was easy and just as promised "This is the last module you will ever have to install".
Everything in the backend worked absolutly perfect.

All thumbs and toes up!!!!!!!!!!!
