The notify module allows users to subscribe to periodic emails which include all new or revised content and/or comments much like the daily news letters sent by some websites. My users have not found notify to be so good. The actual emails produced are confusing & messy. It isn't very configurable. It might be ok for admins to receive emails, but I'm going to try "notifications" because this isn't good enough for my general users.
Shared web hosts offer fairly tight memory constrains (16-32MB). This module is absolutely perfect to "keep an eye" on a site via email, even temporarily, as content or comments are added -- lightweight, indeed!
