Fantastic, does everything but coffee

I am having a delicious living with this fabulous suite that really cares about files. I don't use anymore the standard Drupal file upload system.
Together with Apache Solr (another Must), you'll get faceted searching inside your files!
It is really worth a little bit of attention to properly set it up, install the proper conversion software in your server and explore the immense possibilities.

Nice idea, but desperately needs at least a little documentation

The description states:

"Each file is converted to number of other MIME formats using available open source converters. For example a MS Word file can be automatically converted to PDF, OpenDocument Text (using OpenOffice daemon + JODConverter), Plain text (using catdoc), Flash video (using SWFTools), JPEG (using GhostScript) and Zip (using gzip). Converted (derived) files are saved in the Bitcache and their metadata is extracted and saved in the RDF along with the relation to the original file. All derived files are listed and can be downloaded."

I can find no information about this being successfully used anywhere. I have installed FileFramework, Bitcache, RDF, WebDAV, EXIF, getID3 and the rest (catdoc, etc. are already there). I've got green checkmarks all over my module status page ... the latest versions of everything. I've got no errors on file uploads and cron runs. OpenOffice 3.2 is running headless. Manually running the exact JODConverter syntax as used by the module (File -> Converters -> MIME Converters) successfully converts the files Bitcache has stored in its repository after upload. I can download any of the uploads with no problem. Files are being scanned by ClamAV with no problem, too.

What it WON'T do is convert the files (generic Word to PDF or anything else listed in the Converters section.)

Here are the (cleaned up) last 4 log entries:

  • The file attachment with the nid=62 was created for the node nid=61.
  • story: added Trying to Convert.
  • On a cron run 1 file(s) were inspected, 0 conversion(s) were performed with a 0 bytes total size and 0 error(s). It took 0 second(s).
  • Cron run completed.

I assume the conversion takes place during a cron run ... I can't discover any other mechanism for doing the conversion. From the description, it sounds like the files should be converted during the upload/save procedure.

I really want to give a good review, because the concept of this module is very appealing, however without documentation, the module's claims are falling on frustrated ears.

If there was a place to go that responded to pleas for assistance, that is where I would post this note, but the forums are dead with respect to this module, and I am at a loss at to where else I can go for help. Again, the documentation is essentially non-existent, so there's no help there.
